The Sydney Cricket Ground is the heart of a foundation site in world sport and for more than 160 years has been a place of pilgrimage for people from all over Sydney, NSW and beyond. The world-famous ground is on the doorstep of the Sydney CBD and is fringed by the city’s parklands. The SCG precinct is surrounded by the business and residential communities including Surry Hills and Paddington, as well as retail and dining district, the Entertainment Quarter. The SCG is located alongside the new Allianz Stadium, which is due to open in 2022. It is a replacement for the original SFS (1988), itself a replacement of the former Sydney Sports Ground which was opened in 1903.
Sydney’s original home of sport
The Sydney Cricket Ground was established in 1854 by British troops stationed in nearby Victoria Barracks. It has hosted international cricket, football of all codes, as well as the Empire Games, concerts and all manner of events. Today, thanks to the heritage-listed Members and Ladies pavilions, it is one of the most recognised and loved sporting venues in the world. The most recent development was the 2014 opening of the MA Noble Don Bradman Dally Messenger Stand, which increased capacity to 48,000. The SCG is home to all international cricket, the AFL’s Sydney Swans and the BBL’s Sydney Sixers.
